Field Tested, New Book From Scott Peper and Herb Sargent, Now Available for Preorder
Practical guide shares lessons on leadership, financial discipline, culture and sustainable growth for construction leaders and business owners
TAMPA, Fla., Oct. 08, 2026 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Preorders are now open for Field Tested: Lessons in Leading, Losing, and Winning in Construction, a new book from Scott Peper, co-founder and CEO of Mobilization Funding, and Herb Sargent, board chair of Sargent Corporation.
Available for preorder now on Amazon, Field Tested draws on decades of business experience, including acquisitions, financial challenges, leadership transitions and lessons from decisions that did not go as planned. The book will be released Nov. 3, 2026, in trade paperback and e-book formats.
The book grew out of a series of conversations between Peper and Sargent. As Peper built Mobilization Funding, he sought advice from experienced business owners, mentors and advisers. Sargent became one of those mentors, and their conversations covered many of the decisions construction business owners face as their companies grow. The two later decided to turn those discussions into a book.
“One of the most important things I’ve learned is that you never outgrow the need to learn,” said Peper. “Herb is someone I’ve admired and appreciated for a long time, and this book grew out of the conversations we kept having about the decisions business owners face as they grow. We wanted to turn those lessons into something other leaders could use.”
Across 17 chapters, Field Tested covers management structure, customer selection, financial infrastructure, pricing, partnerships, company culture, hiring and retention, negotiation, innovation and succession planning.
The book combines conversations between Peper and Sargent with examples from their business experience, along with frameworks, checklists, reflection prompts and action items. Each chapter is designed to give readers practical ideas they can apply within their own organizations.
The lessons are drawn largely from the construction industry but are also intended for business owners and leaders managing growth, developing teams or preparing for leadership transitions.
“A lot of the most useful lessons in business come from experience, especially the decisions you would make differently if you had the chance,” said Sargent. “We wanted to share those experiences so other business owners can recognize problems sooner, ask better questions and make stronger decisions.”
Field Tested is available for preorder now on Amazon ahead of its Nov. 3, 2026, release.

In 2013, he sold 100 percent of Sargent to the people who built it, turning every employee into an owner—a decision rooted in the belief that the people are the company.
