4,000 Children to Receive Two Free Books at Book Fair During ArtPrize
Grand Rapids event will celebrate reading and expand access to books through Michigan’s Every Child Reads literacy initiative
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Up to 4,000 children will have the opportunity to take home two free books Sept. 26 as the Michigan Department of Lifelong Education, Advancement, and Potential (MiLEAP) brings a Scholastic Book Fair to Doodle Street at ArtPrize in Grand Rapids.
The book fair will take place from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Grand Rapids Downtown Market, 435 Ionia Ave. SW. The first 4,000 children who attend can choose up to two free books to take home as part of ArtPrize’s Doodle Street, an immersive experience featuring hands-on art, fun activities, and other experiences for children and families.
“Access to books helps children build language and literacy skills while opening the door to imagination, discovery and a lifelong love of reading,” said Dr. Beverly Walker-Griffea, executive director of MiLEAP. “Through Governor Whitmer’s Every Child Reads initiative, we are working to give children and families more opportunities to engage with literacy from an early age. This event brings that work to life by putting books directly into the hands of thousands of Michigan children.”
“Every child deserves the opportunity to discover the joy of reading and have books they can call their own,” said Synthia Britton, interim deputy director of MiLEAP overseeing the Office of Early Education. “Providing children with free, high-quality books helps families build home libraries and creates more opportunities for children to read, explore and learn together. We’re excited to work with Scholastic and ArtPrize to make that opportunity available to families.”

The Scholastic Book Fair at Doodle Street at ArtPrize advances the goals of Every Child Reads, Michigan’s statewide literacy initiative focused on ensuring children have the strong language, literacy and reading foundation they need to succeed. The initiative emphasizes early literacy, evidence-based reading practices and additional support to help every child become a strong reader, writer and communicator.
The book fair is supported by MiLEAP using federal Preschool Development Grant (PDG) funds to collaborate with Scholastic for the free giveaway.
